I recently read a job post for a role called "social media strategist. " The caption read, and I'll paraphrase, "someone with experience building a brand, not just someone who creates posts for social media."
Obviously, I found that very interesting since I can guarantee you that those people who "know how to build a brand" on social media were all at some point "just creating posts" for social media—the same behavior that supposedly this firm hiring a strategist is trying to deter.
Wouldn't it be ironic if those people who figured out the strategy got lucky? In turn, they documented their so-called luck and packaged it as a strategy for others to buy. But it's not ironic, and if we believe that we're overlooking how naive we can be because that's exactly what happened.
They got lucky, and now the people who are telling you that you won't build your brand without a strategy on social media are doing so knowing that they, in fact, at one point, were no different than you are now.
"Just posting on social media."
So, here I am, a self-proclaimed personal brand/marketing/sales & prospecting coach telling you to forego the strategy and "just keep posting."
You don't need to include a riser or a hook in your video. You don't need to space out your sentences to trick the algorithm, and you don't need to wait for the optimum times to share your content. You don't need to use all the hashtags and trendy music, and you certainly don't need to post consistently.
All you need to do is be genuine. You can call that authentic, vulnerable, or whatever you want to call it; just don't get discouraged about building something that already exists.
Your brand, which, in fact, is you.
Thanks
Derek
Also, Normally, I would tell you not to say anything, but in this case, maybe next time you hear a marketing agency talk about the strategy, you could cough while calling bulls*** or just blurt out a "Pfft."
